Genesis Facade Commission: Lee Bul

Writer: Alfonso Lozano del ReyAlfonso Lozano del Rey

In 2024, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Genesis announced a partnership for The Met Facade Commission Series, now called the ‘Genesis Facade Commission,’ an initiative of Hyundai. This exhibition series invites an artist each year to create new artworks that engage in a dialogue between the artist's practice, The Met collection, and the physical Museum itself.

The artworks are displayed atop the four pedestals of The Met’s historic neo-classical facade, welcoming audiences into the museum in a unique and dynamic way.

For the fifth edition of the commission series, the renowned South Korean multidisciplinary artist Lee Bul was selected to create four guardian-like sculptures. These striking pieces invite viewers to reflect on the aspirations and disillusions associated with the concept of progress, as well as our utopian—and potentially dystopian—past, present, and future.

This project took me across the globe, from shooting in Seoul, Korea, where I captured Lee Bul’s creative process in her studio, to engaging with Max Hollein, the Director and CEO of The Met. The series brought together voices from the forefront of sculpture, contemporary art, and public art today, highlighting the significance of this commission in the global artistic landscape.

I had the privilege of collaborating on this project in two key capacities: photography and video production. Documenting the intricate details of Lee Bul’s work and the broader narrative of the Genesis Facade Commission was both inspiring and rewarding. I have the goal to capture the seasonality of The Met’s facade and the stunning Lee Bul artworks, as well as everything under Rava Films, with the chance to collaborate on both projects from two completely different angles!
